Support in the Sewing or Knitting Business
Some students opt to start a dressmaking or knitting business on completion of the course. The first hurdle is to acquire a machine for knitting or sewing due to the expense involved. The school facilitates the acquisition of machines by allowing them to use the ones in the school to knit or sew garments for sale and with the money they earn, be able to pay for them in installments. Jiko Project
In a recently concluded Saturday class the women who successfully completed the course were awarded Jikos. A Jiko is a charcoal burner made locally, which even has an oven to enable the women to bake. With the jiko it is easier for those who would like to start a business of selling mandazis, cakes and as they need less capital. The Jikos were donated to the women. Micro enterprise Recently, Kimlea has started a Micro enterprise project whereby money is provided on loan for women who would like to start businesses but have no capital. The women repay the loan at a small interest. Currently, there are 6 students on the project. Their businesses vary and range from a kiosk to a flower business.
